Compare renovation quotes: align items, not one total

The cheapest-looking quote often simply left out items you assumed were included.

Three documents side by side, a scale ruler, a calculator, and material samples.
Align works scope item by item. Documents shown are not actual quotes.

To compare Hong Kong renovation quotes, align inclusions, exclusions, material assumptions and site-confirmation items first. Homore groups replies to the same brief so you can check line by line—not just chase the lowest price.

Confirm everyone is answering the same brief

Quotes are comparable only when firms see roughly the same scope. If one quotes from Monday’s brief and another from Friday’s revised kitchen plan, the totals have no common base. Homore snapshots the brief you sent; later draft edits do not silently overwrite what was sent. To update, send an explicit update.

Before opening comparison, check yourself: housing type, work type, rooms and must-haves are still the version you mean to compare. Wrong versions only create false confidence.

Break the total back into items before you can see the gap

If a quote summary only gives a total, you only know “they named a figure”. A useful summary splits included, excluded and notes, with understandable HKD ranges. Ranges are not a promised final price — they show how the firm reads the scope.

When aligning, use the same checklist: demolition and disposal, waterproofing, drainage relocation, electrics, plastering, carpentry, painting, sanitary brands, protection, and whether management or rubbish fees are extra. Missing items mean unanswered — not free.

  • If one firm includes an item and another does not list it, treat them as different.
  • If materials say “or equivalent”, ask what equivalent means.
  • The more items left for site confirmation, the less comparable the totals.

Do not read status wording as a done deal

On Homore, a firm can reply with interest, ask for more information, or submit a quote. A first quote may move “sent” to “interested” when appropriate, so you know they are engaging — but it is not a contract, and you have not selected them. You can still compare, or withdraw the enquiry.

Appointments need both sides to confirm time and place. Confirming an appointment is not accepting a quote. Read each status literally so comparison does not treat “replied” as “works awarded”.

Private prices should not drive public ranking

Private price bands on a firm or portfolio are directional for people with access—not a public price league. Homore does not use those figures to rank firms for every visitor. Compare the replies you received; do not treat someone else’s private budget as market truth.

And do not ask firms to post a unit-specific price in public comments. Public figures go incomplete, outdated, or misleading. Request a quote privately, get a written reply, then align the details.

After comparing, the choice is still yours

The platform lets you open quotes and chat in the same enquiry so details do not scatter across apps. It cannot pick the best quote or guarantee works results. Selecting a firm only records your decision.

If two quotes are close in items but far apart in numbers, turn the gap into questions. That beats accepting or rejecting at once. Once clear, you know whether the difference is materials, method, or unspoken risk.

Key takeaways

  1. Confirm quotes match the same brief version before comparing figures.
  2. Unlisted items count as not included — not as free.
  3. A reply, quote or selection is not a works contract.

FAQ

FAQ

Why can two firms’ totals differ so much?

Common causes: different included items, different material assumptions, or one firm excluding site unknowns. Align items first, then explain the gap.

Does Homore comparison automatically pick the cheapest firm?

No. Compare only lays your replies side by side. The choice stays yours; the platform does not guarantee the lowest price.

Can a quote summary replace a contract?

No. A summary helps you understand scope and direction. The works contract must still state items, payment, programme, warranty, and liability.

Open the enquiry you sent and check included versus excluded. Look at totals last — they only help after items align.
